時下，改革開放的富民政策如春風化雨，使一部分企業和個人走上了富裕大道。但富裕之後，人們是否都像豐田公司那樣"富了不忘節儉"呢?筆者曾多次路見躺在路上的一分硬幣，但熙來攘往的行人連眨一下眼睛都不願意，任憑腳踏車碾。"撿到一分錢"交給警察叔叔的童謠已成絕唱。這里有個真實的例子。某地有一造紙廠，原是個較為景氣的小廠。但自從來了個頗具"開拓"精神的廠長之後，該廠很快破了產。原因正是鋪張奢侈。三天一小宴，七天一大宴，廠長出差一趟深圳，回來報銷萬元。"回扣"落進私人腰包，肥了個人，損了眾人。長此以往，這樣的企業怎不敗落?最終，工人只能拿基本工資的30％，回家待業。時下操辦紅白喜事的規模，愈演愈烈，不請上幾十桌，不花上幾千幾萬的，絕不會收兵。
實事求是的說，我們並不富裕，不少地區仍籠罩著貧困的陰影，可是，有些地方，越是貧困越奢侈鋪張。據《文摘周刊》載：A縣是貧困縣之一，國家每年撥給2000萬元的扶貧款，中國人民銀行還提供好幾百萬元的優惠貸款。在這個人口不到27萬的山區縣，僅扶貧款就年人均75元以上。可就是這個縣，它去年的財政支出比人口50萬的鄰縣還多200萬元。人們在該縣政府會議室里看到的情景也令人吃驚：地面鋪著猩紅色豪華地毯，茶幾上擺著全套高檔玻璃鋼茶具，緊靠高級貼牆紙排著一溜高級沙發，還擺有塑料花。這里根本找不出一點貧困的影子，倒反讓豐田公司自慚形穢。貧困，仍念念追求奢侈，這是一種悲哀。想想豐田精神，看看今日自己，不知有何感想?
