Not long ago, many people believed that babies only wanted food and to be kept warm and dry. Some people thought babies were not able to learn things until they were five or six months old.
Yet doctors in the United States say babies begin learning on their first day of life. The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development is a federal government agency. Its goal is to identify which experiences can influence healthy development in human beings.
Research scientists at the institute note that babies are strongly influenced by their environment. They say a baby will smile if her mother does something the baby likes. A baby learns to get the best care possible by smiling to please her mother or other caregiver. This is how babies learn to connect and communicate with other human beings

GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS: Are They Safe?
- Are genetically modified crops an environmental dream come true or a disaster in the making? Scientists are looking for answers
The world seems increasingly divided into those who favor genetically modified (GM) foods and those who fear them. Advocates assert that growing genetically altered crops can be kinder to the environment and that eating foods from those plants is perfectly safe. And, they say, genetic engineering-which can ince plants to grow in poor soils or to proce more nutritious foods-will soon become an essential tool for helping to feed the world's burgeoning population. Skeptics contend that GM crops could pose unique risks to the environment and to health-risks too troubling to accept placidly. Taking that view, many European countries are restricting the planting and importation of GM agricultural procts. Much of the debate hinges on perceptions of safety. But what exactly does recent scientific research say about the hazards? The answers, too often lost in reports on the controversy, are served up in the pages that follow.

New technology may help scientists decode dolphin communication. Florida-based dolphin researcher Jack Kassewitz and British acoustic engineer John Stuart Reid are analyzing dolphin sounds with an instrument called a CymaScope. The scope has a thin membrane that vibrates as sound passes through it. Then it converts those vibrations into a 3-D, high-definition image. Kassewitz hopes the unprecedented detail will solve some mysteries.
Pamela Martin is a geophysicist at the University of Chicago. She co-authored a 2009 study analyzing the environmental impact of an American diet based on meat versus a diet based on vegetables.
Pamela Martin: Right now the current mean American diet has 28% meat, but there』 nothing to say that if we all cut back to 10% that we would suffer nutritionally. And yet the environment would benefit quite a bit from that.
Martin』s study examined how much land a meat-based diet versus a vegetable-based diet would require to support Americans.
Pamela Martin: You need about four and a half times the amount of land to grow feed that you feed for cattle, versus using that land directly to grow food that we would directly consume.
Ultimately, Martin said, raising livestock requires more fertilizer and emits more greenhouse gases. These have environmental impacts.

The authors develop and test a multiclassifier-based near-real-time face detection system based on the premise that a three-part strategy is necessary for designing real-time face detection systems that provide high detection rates. The critical factors for real-time face detection are based on a framework of multiple classification functions: (1) a skin classification function is used as the preliminary stage in order to prune the search, localize the computation, and therefore improve performance time; (2) subsequently, three coarse-to-fine statistical model based classifiers are used to scan the windows and discard most non-face windows; and (3) finally, faces and non-faces are verified from images. The bagging ensemble algorithm (bootstrap aggregating) is also applied to improve the performance of detection rates.
Want a glance of the future of health care? Take a look at the way the various networks of people about patient care are being connected to one another, and how this new connectivity is being exploited to deliver medicine to the patient —no matter where he or she may be.
Online doctors offering advice based on normal symptoms(症狀) are the most obvious example. Increasingly, however, remote diagnosis(遠程診斷) will be based on real physiological data(生理數據) from the actual patient. A group from the University of Kentucky has shown that by using personal data assistance plus a mobile phone, it is perfectly practical to send a patient』s important signs over the telephone. With this kind of equipment, the cry asking whether there was a doctor in the house could well be a thing of the past.
Other medical technology groups are working on applying telemedicine to rural(countryside) care. And at least one team wants to use telemedicine as a tool for disaster need—especially after earthquakes. On the whole, the trend is towards providing global access to medical data and experts』 opinions.
But there is one problem. Bandwidth(寬頻) is the limiting factor for sending complex(復雜的) medical pictures around the world — CT photos being one of the biggest bandwidth users. Communication satellites may be able to deal with the short-term needs ring disasters such as earthquakes or wars. But medicine is looking towards both the second-generation Internet and third-generation mobile phones for the future of remote medical service.
Doctors have met to discuss computer-based tools for medical diagnosis, training and telemedicine. With the falling price of broadband communications, the new technologies should start a new time when telemedicine and the sharing of medical information, experts』 opinions and diagnosis are common.(這片有點長)

A Boy and His Tree
A long time ago, there was a huge apple tree. A little boy loved to come and play around it every day. He climbed to the tree top, ate the apples, took a nap under the shadow… He loved the tree and the tree loved to play with him.
Time went by…The little boy had grown up and he no longer played around the tree.
One day, the boy came back to the tree and looked sad. 「Come and play with me,」 the tree asked the boy.
「I am no longer a kid, I don』 play around trees anymore.」 The boy replied, 「I want toys. I need money to buy them.」 「Sorry, but I don』t have money…but you can pick all my apples and sell them. So, you will have money.」 The boy was so excited. He picked all the apples on the tree and left happily. The boy didn』t come back after he picked the apples. The tree was sad.
One day, the boy returned and the tree was so excited. 「Come and play with me.」 The tree said. 「I don』t have time to play. I have to work for my family. We need a house for shelter. Can you help me?」 「Sorry, but I don』t have a house. But you can cut off my branches to build your house.」 So the boy cut all the branches of the tree and left happily.
The tree was glad to see him happy but the boy didn』t appear since then. The tree was again lonely and sad. One hot summer day, the boy returned and the tree was delighted. 「Come and play with me!」 the tree said.
「I am sad and getting old. I want to go sailing to relax myself. Can you give me a boat?」 「Use my trunk to build the boat. You can sail and be happy.」 So the boy cut the tree trunk to make a boat. He went sailing and did not show up for a long time.
Finally, the boy returned after he left for so many years. 「Sorry, my boy. But I don』t have anything for you anymore. No more apples for you.」 the tree said. 「 I don』t have teeth to bite.」 The boy replied. 「 No more trunk for you to climb on.」 「I am too old for that now.」 the boy said. 「I really want to give you something…the only thing left is my dying roots.」 The tree said with tears. 「I don』t need much now, just a place to rest. I am tired after all these years.」 The boy replied. 「Good! Old tree roots are the best place to lean on and rest. Come here, please sit down with me and have a rest.」 The boy sat down and the tree was glad and smiled with tears…
This is a story of everyone. The tree is our parent. When we were young, we loved to play with Mom and Dad… When we grow up, we leave them, and only come to them when we need something or when we are in trouble. No matter what, parents will always be there and give everything they could to make you happy. You may think that the boy is cruel to the tree but that's how all of us are treating our parents.
