Once upon a time the colors of the world started to quarrel.
All claimed that they were the best.
The most important.
The most useful.
The favorite.
Green said:
"Clearly I am the most important. I am the sign of life and of hope. I was chosen for grass, trees and leaves. Without me, all animals would die. Look over the countryside and you will see that I am in the majority."
Blue interrupted:
"You only think about the earth, but consider the sky and the sea. It is the water that is the basis of life and drawn up by the clouds from the deep sea. The sky gives space and peace and serenity. Without my peace, you would all be nothing."
Yellow chuckled:
"You are all so serious. I bring laughter, gaiety, and warmth into the world. The sun is yellow, the moon is yellow, the stars are yellow. Every time you look at a sunflower, the whole world starts to smile. Without me there would be no fun."
Orange started next to blow her trumpet:
"I am the color of health and strength. I may be scarce, but I am precious for I serve the needs of human life. I carry the most important vitamins. Think of carrots, pumpkins, oranges, mangoes, and papayas. I don't hang around all the time, but when I fill the sky at sunrise or sunset, my beauty is so striking that no one gives another thought to any of you."
Red could stand it no longer he shouted out:
"I am the ruler of all of you. I am blood - life's blood! I am the color of danger and of bravery. I am willing to fight for a cause. I bring fire into the blood. Without me, the earth would be as empty as the moon. I am the color of passion and of love, the red rose, the poinsettia and the poppy."
Purple rose up to his full height:
He was very tall and spoke with great pomp: "I am the color of royalty and power. Kings, chiefs, and bishops have always chosen me for I am the sign of authority and wisdom. People do not question me! They listen and obey."
Finally Indigo spoke, much more quietly than all the others, but with just as much determination:
"Think of me. I am the color of silence. You hardly notice me, but without me you all become superficial. I represent thought and reflection, twilight and deep water. You need me for balance and contrast, for prayer and inner peace."
And so the colors went on boasting, each convinced of his or her own superiority. Their quarreling became louder and louder. Suddenly there was a startling flash of bright lightening thunder rolled and boomed. Rain started to pour down relentlessly. The colors crouched down in fear, drawing close to one another for comfort.
In the midst of the clamor, rain began to speak:
"You foolish colors, fighting amongst yourselves, each trying to dominate the rest. Don't you know that you were each made for a special purpose, unique and different? Join hands with one another and come to me."
Doing as they were told, the colors united and joined hands.
The rain continued:
"From now on, when it rains, each of you will stretch across the sky in a great bow of color as a reminder that you can all live in peace. The Rainbow is a sign of hope for tomorrow." And so, whenever a good rain washes the world, and a Rainbow appears in the sky, let us remember to appreciate one another.

The Rainy Day 雨天
The day is cold, and dark, and dreary;
It rains, and the wind is never weary;
The vine still clings to the moldering wall,
But at every gust the dead leaves fall,
And the day is dark and dreary.
My life is cold and dark and dreary;
It rains and the wind is never weary;
My though still cling to the moldering past,
But the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast,
And the days are dark and dreary.
Be still, sad heart! And cease repining;
Behind the clouds is the sun still shining;
Thy fate is the common fate of all,
Into each life some rain must fall,
Some days must be dark and dreary.
天冷、阴暗、沉闷;
下着雨,风也刮个不停;
我的生活寒冷、阴郁、沉闷;
下着雨,风也刮个不停;
安静吧,忧伤的心!别再悔恨;
乌云后面太阳依然辉煌灿烂;

The Bridge
Once upon a time two brothers who lived on neighboring farms fell into conflict.
One morning there was a knock on John’s door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter’s toolbox.
“I’m looking for a few days’ work,” he said. “Perhaps you would have a few small jobs here and there I could help with?”
“Yes,” said the elder brother. “I do have a job for you. Look across the creek at that farm. That’s my neighbor; in fact, it’s my younger brother’s. Last week there was a meadow between us, but he took his bulldozer to the river levee, and now there is a creek between us. See that pile of lumber by the barn? I want you to build me a fence—an 8-foot fence—so I won’t need to see his face any more.”
The carpenter said, “I think I understand the situation. I’ll be able to do a job that pleases you.”
The elder brother had to go to town on business, so he helped the carpenter get the materials ready, and then he was off. About sunset when John returned, the carpenter had just finished his job. John’s eyes opened wide. There was no fence there at all.
It was a bridge—a bridge stretching from one side of the creek to the other! A fine piece of work, handrails and all and the neighbor, his younger brother, was coming across, his hand outstretched.
“You are quite a fellow to build this bridge after all I’ve said and done.” The two brothers stood at each end of the bridge, and then they met in the middle, taking each other’s hand, then embracing each other.
They turned to see the carpenter raise his toolbox on his shoulder. “No, wait! Stay a few days. I’ve a lot of other projects for you,” said John. “I’d love to stay on.” The carpenter said, “but I have many more bridges to build.”
The story goes that two friends were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey they had an argument, and one friend slapped the other one in the face.
The one who got slapped felt hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand: "Today my best friend slapped me in the face."
They kept on walking until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The one who had been slapped got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but the friend saved him.
After he recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone: "Today my best friend saved my life."
The friend who had slapped and saved his best friend asked him, "After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now you write on a stone. Why?"
The other friend replied: "When someone hurts us we should write it down in sand where winds of forgiveness can erase it away. But when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it in stone where no wind can ever erase it."
A young man sees a sunset and, unable to understand or to express the emotion that it rouses in him, concludes that it must be the gateway to a world that lies beyond. It is difficult for any of us in moments of intense aesthetic experience to resist the suggestion that we are catching a glimpse of a light that shines down to us from a different realm of existence, different and, because the experience is intensely moving, in some way higher. And, though the gleams blind and dazzle, yet they do convey a hint of beuty and serenity greater than we have known or imagined. Greater too than we can describe, for language, which was invented to convey the meanings of this world, cannot readily be fitted to the uses of another.
That all great art has this power of suggesting a world beyond is undeniable. In some moods, nature shares it. There is no sky in June so blue that it does not point forward to a bluer, no sunset beautiful so that it does not waken the vision of a greater beauty, a vision which passes before it is fully glimpsed, and in passing leaves an indefinable longing and regret. But, if this world is not merely a bad joke, life a vulgar flare amid the cool radiance of the stars, and existence an empty laugh braying across the mysteries, if these intimations of a something behind and beyond are not evil humor born of indigestion, or whimsies sent by the devil to mock and madden us, if, in a word, beauty means something, yet we must not seek to interpret the meaning. If we glimpse the unutterable, it is unwise to try to utter it, nor should we seek to invest with significance that which we cannot grasp. Beauty is in the terms of human meanings is meaningless.
Don't Give Up
If we should ever accomplish anything in life, let us not forget that we must persevere.
If we would learn our lessons in school, we must be diligent and not give up whenever we come to anything difficult.
We shall find many of our lessons very hard, but let us consider that the harder they are the better they will do to us if we will persevere and learn them thoroughly.
But there are some among us who are ready to give up when they come to a hard example in mathematics, and say, "I can't do this."
They never will if they feel so.
I can't never did anything worth while; but I'll try accomplish wonders.
Let us remember that we shall meet with difficulties all through life.
They are in the pathway of everyone.
If we will only try and keep trying, we shall be sure to conquer and overcome every difficulty we meet with.
If we have a hard lesson today, let us strive to learn it well and then we shall be prepared for a harder one tomorrow.
And if we learn to master hard lessons in school, it will prepare us to overcome the hard things that we shall meet in life, when our school days are over.

The
Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway’s most enring works and may
very well become one of the true classics of this generation. It played a
great part in his winning the Pulizer Prize in 1953 and the 1954 Novel
Prize for Literature and confirmed his power and presence in the
literary world. Hemingway is also one of my favorite writers. Besides
The Old Man And the Sea, I have read some of his other works, such as
The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms and The Snow of Kilimanijaro. But
The Old Man and the Sea is the one that left the deepest impression on
me.
This novel mainly wrote one old person alone in marine fishes. He
fished one big fish, tied up the fish head and the upper part of the
body side the boat above. But he met the shark fish, the old person
causes all one\'s skill and the shark fish fight, the shark fish the
fish flesh which could eat all eats finished also has about 800 pounds.
This
book promulgates the truth, not showed the person how regardleof, most
feared is does not have the confidence. The confidence is just like is
the automobile motor, is power which the person goes forward.
I first read this book when I was in my fifteens. And now I remember it just as well as if I had read it yesterday.【

A man had a little daughter— only and much-loved child. He lived for her—she was his life. So when she became ill, he became like a man possessed, moving heaven and earth to bring about her restoration to health。
His best efforts, however, proved unavailing and the child died. The father became a bitter recluse, shutting himself away from his many friends and refusing every activity that might restore his poise and bring him back to his normal self. But one night he had a dream。
He was in heaven, witnessing a grand pageant of all the little child angels. They were marching in a line passing by the Great White Throne. Every white-robed angelic child carried a candle. He noticed that one child's candle was not lighted. Then he saw that the child with the dark candle was his own little girl. Rushing to her, he seized her in his arms, caressed her tenderly, and then asked, "How is it, darling, that your candle alone is unlighted?" "Daddy, they often relight it, but your tears always put it out."
Just then he awoke from his dream. The lesson was crystal clear, and its effects were immediate. From that hour on he was not a recluse, but mingled freely and cheerfully with his former friends and associates. No longer would his darling's candle be extinguished by his useless tears。

I've just fininshed reading the first 4 Harry Potter books for about the 5th time through, and they're just as magical and affecting as they have ever been. Everything is in here: suspense, adventure, mystery, humour, danger. There's even some pretty satisfying paybacks. The characters are fantastic and fantastically realistic. There are bad people who turn out to be good guys and good people who turn out to be bad guys, just like life.
