【一个初冬的夜晚，屋外的风猛烈地吹着。伯诺德夫人家里，昏暗的光线，一张孤零零的长桌，坐在桌边的伯诺德夫人正小心翼翼地将一个小金属管封在一小截蜡烛中。】
伯诺德夫人：看来，只有这地方是安全的，不至于被该死的德国佬发现。
杰奎琳：（一边嚼着糖果，一边天真地问）妈妈，这是什么啊?
伯诺德夫人：（面容严肃）非常重要的一个秘密，亲爱的，所以对谁也不能讲。
杰克：我知道，在下星期二米德叔叔来之前，我们得保证那东西完好无损。对吧?（有点儿得意地看了妹妹一眼）
杰奎琳：（嘟起了嘴）我当然也知道。米德叔叔最喜欢我了，今天他还给我带来了糖果。可是妈妈，米德叔叔为什么穿着德国佬的衣服呢?

伯诺德夫人：（急忙取出一盏油灯）太对不起了，先生们，忘了点灯。瞧，这灯亮些，可以把这个昏暗的小蜡烛熄了。（吹熄了蜡烛）
中尉甲 ：（ 不耐烦地）晚上这么黑，多点支蜡烛也好嘛。（又把那个快要烧到金属管的蜡烛点燃）更亮了一些，不是吗?
杰克：（若无其事地走到桌前，端起烛台）天真冷。先生们，我去柴房抱些柴来生个火吧。
中尉乙 ：（厉声 严肃）难道你不用蜡烛就不行吗?（一把夺回烛台）
[杰克无奈地去柴房，下。
伯诺德夫人：（不动声色地慢慢说道）先生，要知道，柴房里很黑……
